Scout recognizes how in depth the roots of prejudice runs in Maycomb. She sees that you can change the laws and regulations of the court and go by all the rules, but unless there is change in the hearts of men, racism and cliched behavior will go on. Tom had a fair trial and Atticus did all he could, but because of deeply intrinsic attitude of prejudice, Tom had no choice.
