You change 1/3 and 3/4 so that they have the same denominator.
The GCF is 12 in this case.

1/3 x 4 = 4/12
3/4 x 3 = 9/12

4/12 + 9/12 = 13/12 or 1 1/12 (One and one twelfth)

If it was to be a even number you'd simplify but 7 doesn't go into 12 so you leave it as is...
