How did the spanish-american war lead to the united states having more colonies overseas?

The war provided the United States an opportunity to seize overseas possessions, it began building an American empire. After the ousting Spain from Cuba, the U.S. seized Puerto Rico. It annexed the Philippines, Samoa, Guam, Wake island, and last but not least Hawaii.
