5x + 23 = -2x - 12
First, you carry the variables to one side and the rational numbers to the other.
5x + 23 = -2x - 12
      - 23 =      +23
________________
5x = -2x + 11
+2x = +2x
________________
7x = 11
The you divide 11 by 7 to get x.
x = 1.571

Hope this helps!
