Why does water float? What happens to water as it becomes ice at the molecular level?

Answer: the density of an object is what determines whether that object float or sinks.

Water is less dense than other components in mixture thus it will float.

Explanation: When Ice forms it takes up at 9% more space than it did as liquid. Water is dense as a solid than as a liquid which is why ice floats.
