What were the Crusades? What was the goal of the Crusades? Were the Europeans successful?

The crusades were part of several military orders including the Knights templar,Teutonic Knights, and the Hospitallers. They defended holy land and protected pilgrims traveling to and from the region. They were successful because they successfully extended the reach of Christianity and western civilization.
