The first had experienced hydraulic issues, the second had been stuck in a sandstorm, and the third exhibited indications of a damaged rotor blade.
These were the failure of the desert one mission.
Commanders in the American military worked on a prospective rescue mission plan and ran training drills to assess the personnel and resources needed for the operation. On April 16, 1980, President Carter granted permission for a military rescue operation. The two-day mission required helicopters and C-130 planes to meet on a salt flat (known as Desert One in code) some 200 miles southeast of Tehran. It involved components from all four branches of the U.S. military forces. There, the C-130s would refuel the helicopters, and they would also pick up men for war. After delivering the troops to the mountain area, the helicopters would conduct the real rescue operation the following evening. Forces were stationed all throughout Oman and the Arabian Sea starting on April 19th.
On April 24, 1980, an unsuccessful military effort to free the 66 American hostages held in Tehran culminated with the deaths of eight American service members and the failure to free any hostages.
