Let x represent the number. The same of the number and 6. x+6.
The same of the number and six doubled. 2x+12
"Is" means equals. Five less than the number. x-5.
So, 2x+12=x-5
2x+12-x=-5
x+12=-5
x=-5-12
x=-17
