Liquefaction is a phenomenon where soil is partially or completely saturated and it losses stiffness and strength. The soil starts to behave like a liquid and looses its ability to hold structures.

This occurs mostly during earthquakes or some other stress causing events because soil particles lose contact with one another, mostly because of vibrations or water pressure.
