What factors caused the slave trade to grow? How did this affect condition to the middle passage?

1) People needed slaves to do their work, and 2) slave trade was very popular and slave traders usually earned a pretty penny for selling/trading slaves. 

It affected conditions on the Middle Passage because the journey (which could take 2-3 months) was deadly and frightening.
