When he did march through, he brought with him diseases from Europe, those that would have devastated the tribes he encountered. His aggression as well toward those he encountered had a negative effect on them since, if they appeared threatening to him, he could slaughter the tribes. His presence so devastated the tribes through illness that the population thinned out too much, leaving the balance of tribal survival in jeopardy.
